You can hardly imagine what a cruel scene must have been played here in the last few hours…

Port au Prince – A prison break in Haiti killed 25 people and more than 400 prisoners escaped.

A government spokesperson on Friday (local time) said that there are six prison inmates and heads of detention centers in fatal cases. In addition, the exodus killed many civilians in its flight.

The spokesman said that about 60 have now survived. He also said that the head of an infamous gang, Anil Joseph, who had fled the detention center, was killed a good 100 kilometers northwest of the prison on Friday after attacking police officers.

In the notorious high-security institution, about twice as many inmates vegetated in a confined space before a mass exodus. The prison at Croix-des-Bouquets near the capital Port-au-Prince is designed for a maximum of 872 prisoners. At the time of the outbreak on Thursday, however, many prisoners numbered about 1542.

In 2014, dozens of prisoners escaped from custody. At that time, armed assailants freed the arrested comrades.
