Woman cyclist dies after collision near Dufferin Mall

A woman cyclist died Wednesday evening at an intersection in front of Dufferin Mall after a collision that involved two vehicles.

Further details on the cyclist are being withheld as officers work to notify the victim’s family, Inspector Michael Williams said.

Additionally, police said they were called to Dufferin Street and Sylvan Avenue at around 6:30 p.m., and announced the woman had succumbed to her injuries at about 7 p.m.

It appears the woman was travelling south on Dufferin Street when a driver headed in the same direction clipped her, Williams said.

She “subsequently ended up in northbound traffic,” and was then struck by another vehicle that was headed north, he added.

The drivers of both vehicles remained at the scene, Williams said.

One witness, Ruzanna Sukiasyan, said she was walking her dog at Dufferin Grove Park across the street when she heard the crash.

Sukiasyan said she then crossed the street and saw an SUV had stopped in the middle of the road with the cyclist underneath.

“It was obvious she was lifeless,” Sukiasyan said. “This was before police and paramedics got to the scene.

“There was a bunch of witnesses that also stuck around… A lot of us that were there were in shock.”

Police closed Dufferin Street northbound and southbound while officers investigated, Const. Laura Brabant said.

At about 10:20 p.m., police said roads reopened.

Police ask that anyone with information or dash cam footage call 416-808-1900.
