Alleged censorship: Turkey bans advertising from Twitter

Accusation of censorship
Turkey bans advertising from Twitter

So far, Twitter has categorically refused to implement a new law by the Turkish government for social networks. Officials are now banning all platforms of the company from advertising. Should Twitter still not give in, and follow more drastic steps.

Turkey has imposed an advertising ban on Twitter for violating the controversial social media law. The ban also affects Twitter’s live video app Periscope and the online Pinterest bulletin board, according to a decision published in the official journal. A law passed in July obliges Turkish citizens to have providers of foreign platforms with more than one million Turkish users to open branches in Turkey as their representatives.

Representation by a legal person is also possible. If no representative is registered, the penalty will be gradually imposed to reduce the penalty. This means that pages can be made virtually unusable. Activists and human rights activists accused the government of trying to enforce censorship. Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Fmer Fatah Sayan wrote on Twitter that it was expected that Pinterest and Twitter would take the necessary steps “immediately”.

The last thing you want is to reduce bandwidth for social networks that are not doing their job. Turkey had already fined Twitter and other networks, including Facebook and YouTube, in December. YouTube, Facebook and other providers have now announced that they will appoint a representative in Turkey.
