NHL – Patrick Marleau will play his 1767th qualifying game in the NHL in a 5–2 win for the San Jose Sharks from the Minnesota Wild. With this, Canada equaled Gordy Howe’s record.
In October 1997, the now 41-year-old Marleau made his debut in the best league in the world. The striker, drafted as the No. 2 running back Joe Thornton in 1997, completed his career in San Jose with the exception of two seasons in Toronto and a short detour to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
In his 1,767 games in NHL qualification, Marleau scored 566 goals and had 630 assists, adding another game in 195 games at the playoffs (72 goals, 55 assists). In 2010 and 2014, Marleau won Olympic gold with Canada, but he never won the Stanley Cup.
Two Swiss strikers Timo Meier (San Jose) and Kevin Fiala (Minnesota) were again without a scoreless point in the second duel within 24 hours.
