Toronto also canceled this year

(Motorsport-Total.com) – It was already running, now it’s official: The IndyCar race on the street circuit in Toronto (Canada) won’t happen this year either. The cancellation of the city race, which was officially planned for July 11, was announced by the organizer on Friday.

After suffering a Toronto race coronovirus epidemic in 2020, this, or related restrictions and regulations in the Canadian province of Ontario are once again the reason for the cancellation.

IndyCar boss Mark Miles described the Toronto city race as “a hallmark of our summer calendar” and therefore “shocking that it is now missing for the second year in a row”. According to Miles, the racing series aims for Toronto to “return to full speed” by 2022.

A replacement race for Toronto in the IndyCar calendar 2021 has not yet been confirmed. According to the IndyCar announcement, “several scenarios are being considered”. Most likely, one of the current races will be converted into a double header. The candidates for this will be Elkhart Lake (June 20) or Mid-Ohio (July 4). Contrary to the original plan, both racetracks held two races instead of one in the 2020 IndyCar season.

As of Toronto, the cancellation of 2021 now marks the third year since it premiered in 1986 that the race would not take place. Apart from 2020, there was no driving in the Canadian metropolis in 2008. Subsequently, the short-lived reunion between the ChampCar series and the Indy Racing League did not have a place on the calendar.
