What a great performance by the German national ice hockey team in the second World Cup game!

The goals for the German team were scored by Mathias Plakta (20th), Leon Gawanke (24th), Leo Föderl (27th), Lukas Reichl (31st) and Lein Bergmann (45th). For Gawanke it was also his first goal for the German national team.

Germany had the highest yield with six points in the first two days of the tournament. (complete group stage schedule)

Asked if this is the perfect start for the German team in the World Cup, Reichl replied in an interview game1: “Certainly.” Reichel continued: We got into the game well from the start. We never stopped plowing and that’s why we won.”

Söderholm changed goalkeeper against Norway

In comparison to the opening win, Söderholm had only replaced the goalkeeper. For Mannheim’s Felix Bruckmann, Berlin’s master goalkeeper Mathias Niederberger stood between the posts. Storm and defense structures remained unchanged.

Niederberger found the job early as the Norwegian, who had played his first tournament game, started off very aggressively. The DEB selection initially had problems getting out of their territory in a systematic way. The first outnumbered game also didn’t go smoothly.

German skid cracks slowly found their way into the game later on. A 1-0 lead 16 seconds before the first third break acted as a libation. Plakta drives a Schlenzer into the goal from captain Moritz Müller.

DEB’s team did magic in the second third

The power play worked in the second third as well: World Cup debutant Gawanke scored his first international goal with a slap in the corner, which was cleared by his defensive ally Marcel Brandt. Then Germany turned it around and sometimes showed magic ice hockey.

As a result, the DEB team went 3–0. After some great preliminary work by his Berlin club colleagues Marcel Knoebels and Reichel, Föderl completed the successful combination.

Reichl said after the game, “Norway were a better team than Italy, we knew that before the game. So we prepared ourselves well and played well.”

Reichel fulfills a dream for Germany

Sometimes Soderholm’s team played themselves in a frenzy, going 4:0 as a representative. Reichel put up a brilliant single with a blow into the corner.

Emil Lilleberg (37th) scored for the Scandinavians, who had beaten Germany three times in a row at the previous World Championships, meanwhile only 1:4. (Everything you need to know about the 2021 World Cup)

“It’s not easy. Not surprising by any means. We work hard for the goals and don’t allow much. I think the score is pretty fair,” said Mathias Plachta game1 Already after the second third.
