Neckar was reconstructed between Wendlingen and Unterensingen – a compensatory measure for the new ICE line
While the new ICE line Stuttgart–Ulm is striving towards completion, the railway is also accompanied by a number of reconstruction measures by the DB Projektgesellschaft Stuttgart–Ulm. Yesterday Necker got his last breakthrough. The river between Wendlingen and Unterensingen is thus withdrawing one of its former oxbow lakes.
Wendlingen/Underensing. After the heavy rains of the past few weeks, which caused the river’s level to rise sharply, the Necker is already flowing at a leisurely pace in its bed. The water of Necker soaked in mud reminds of a storm. Down here, by the K 1219, by the motorway to the north and the L 1250 across the river and by the railway line, the noise from road and rail is barely audible. The green rises near the valley floor, contrasting comfortably with the rock and sand. George Witt assured that most of it would be green here in a few months. Georg Witt is a project engineer at the DB Project Stuttgart-Ulam GmbH and responsible for the Fielder/Wendlingen area. After the redevelopment measures are completed, probably in the middle of next week, the site’s typical grasses and herbs will be sown in 6000 square meters of wet meadow, followed by top dressing. Further plantings will follow in autumn. 27 trees, pollard willow, red alder and common oak are to be planted on the embankments. The area would later be left more or less to its own devices and would become a protected haven for animals and other plants. Walkers or bathers are not welcome there.

The freight train connection, near Wendlingen, was turned down a few years ago because the freight trains for which it was built do not actually exist yet, developing into an almost imperceptible structure. Because on their track, ICE is directed to the current line and then to Stuttgart. You can see how far the construction work has progressed here in our short video and our photo gallery.
