Remains of 215 children found in boarding school grounds

Kamloops – The remains of 215 Native Canadian children have been found on the property of a so-called residential school in Canada. They were found during a radar check of property near the town of Kamloops in western Canada, said Rosanne Casimir, chief of the Sekwepemak indigenous people who live there. “As per our information, these are unspecified deaths. Some were only three years old.”

So-called residential schools were a type of boarding school, of which there were thousands in Canada. Tribal children were forced to attend schools. They were forbidden to speak their mother tongue and follow their own culture. Some children did not see their parents for years. The purpose of the schools was to eradicate the culture of the indigenous people. Kamloops Residential School was running from 1890 to 1969. Casimir announced, a full report on the discovery would follow.

The news broke his heart, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Friday via short messaging service Twitter. “It is a painful reminder of this dark and shameful chapter in the history of our country.”

Trudeau apologized to the country’s natives and Canada is working to come to terms with it and make amends. Yet, there is still discrimination and inequality.
