You’re more used to Hubble: more colors, more pokes, more wows! And yet these new images from the space telescope are generating excitement among researchers. Because they show the first scientific observations since a fault nearly a month ago paralyzed critical instruments.
ARP-MADORE2115-273 can be seen as a rare example of a pair of interacting galaxies in the Southern Hemisphere, about 300 million light-years away (left). On the other hand, the large spiral galaxy ARP-MADORE0002-503 (right) with unusual, elongated spiral arms. While most disc galaxies have an even number of spiral arms, this galaxy has three, US space agency NASA report.
On June 13, 2021, the control computer for the instruments on the telescope suddenly failed. When the high-end main computer stops receiving signals, it automatically puts scientific instruments “on hold”. The defect can be removed. Hubble has been operational again since July 17, 2021, stretching its orbits at an altitude of about 550 kilometers and is likely to surprise with many more photos in its 32nd year of operation as well.
