That Olympic Thursday Brings
Four medal chances for Germany
Day 6 at the Olympic Games in Tokyo: Few medals possible for the Germans. Swimming may be successful again at night after the knot bursts. But judo or rowing can also be promising.
swimming: Half the Kohler/Wellbrock family has already delivered. Sarah Koehler ends a 13-year long Olympic dry spell for German swimmers. Her bronze medal in the 1500m freestyle at night is the first German since Britta Stefan’s double gold in Beijing in 2008. His fiancée Florian Wellbrock can now catch up with the men in the 800m freestyle (3:30 p.m.). During her initial run, she set a German record in her final, just like her fiancé. It should be nothing short of a gold medal for the world champion against fellow favorites Mikhailo Romantschuk (Ukraine) and Robert Finke (USA) in the final.
The women’s relay for the sixth time is in the final (5:31 pm) in the 4x200m freestyle. But medals against defending champion teams from Canada, Italy and the United States are unlikely. Nevertheless, Isabel Goss, Leonie Kullman, Annika Brühn and Marie Pietruska made it further with their final qualification in Rio than their predecessors.
It was a backdoor farewell to two big swimming careers. “Out of the question” is how national coach Bernd Berkhan called Franziska Henke’s performance in the semi-final over the 200m butterfly. It was six seconds behind the German record. As a result, the final will also take place without him (at 4:28 am). It’s a similar story for 2015 world champion Marco Koch, who disappointed in the chest over 200m. When Anton Shubko (Russia), Isaac Stubly-Cook (Australia), Shoma Sato (Japan) fight for medals at 03.44 a.m., he can only watch. It is unlikely that they will both jump into Olympic waters again.
judo: Anne-Maria Wagner has been the world champion in judo for 47 days. After the title and a short vacation in Budapest, the goal is now even bigger: an Olympic victory. Chances are good, even if Wagner is a little more cautious: “I would say competing in the Olympics is a little tough because everyone is really there.” French Madeleine Malonga, for example, didn’t even appear to defend her title at the World Cup. But he is in Tokyo. Hence there could be a tough competition to sleep in the weight category up to 78 kgs (from 11:38 am onwards).
Carl-Richard Frey is not alone in Tokyo. The Frey family is represented twice. While Brother Johannes still has a break, tomorrow, Thursday (from 12.09 p.m.) things are getting serious for Carl-Richard. In the finals in the weight category up to 100 kg, however, she has only outsiders’ chances. He likes to compete against and beat other athletes, he said shortly before the Games. And who knows, there may even be a medal for it.
Kanuslalom: Andrea Herzog doesn’t make things any more difficult than they really are. “I don’t want to be under so much pressure. I’m the youngest in the team and two medals for the team is already great,” said the 21-year-old: “I just have to focus on myself and see if I do well. I’ve been.” She just wants to see his performance, only he can impress her. It worked well in the Olympic test run at the World Cup in Markleburg – he won it. Now, in Tokyo, she is also up against the sport’s true icon, Jessica Fox. But the Australian made mistakes in his two initial runs – the opposite of Herzog. The semi-finals at 7 am and the medal fight will begin at 8.45 am. Perhaps gold and bronze winners Ricarda Funk and Sideris Tasidis will give you a tip or two.
rowingGermany Eight is considered the parade boat of the Germans. But apart from this there are also chances of medals. Jason Osborne and Jonathan Rommelman are among the favorites in the lightweight double sculls (2.50 hrs) final. “When we were in a boat together for the first time, it felt like we had been sailing together for a long time,” he said when they were put in a boat in early 2019. The lighter weight categories will probably no longer exist in Paris in 2024, so Tokyo will likely be their last Olympic trip together. Hope it will be a success.
shoot: Andreas Low has already achieved the greatest success. “Competing in the men’s trap at the Olympic Games in Tokyo means a lot to me,” the 39-year-old said. His original discipline, the double trap, is no longer Olympic. No problem for Lou, flexible as he is, he changed. Nevertheless, as seventh in the first qualifying round, he still has a chance at the final (8.30 am).
exercise: In the women’s gymnastics final, in the all-around competition (from 12.50 pm) the focus is a participant who does not participate in the competition at all. Actually, this should have been Simone Biles’ big moment. Incredibly extraordinary athlete. what makes them so special Once in a text “The New York Times”You can’t compare to football icon Tom Brady, tennis superstar Serena Williams and golfer Tiger Woods. Because there’s an important difference: These game greats lose from time to time—not bile. This makes it a moment of even greater greatness when she said that she cannot compete due to mental issues. The American will not defend his gold medal from this. Elizabeth Seitz and Kim Bui are also represented in the finals. Things should be better in person after a disappointing performance in the team. However, Brazilians are favored by Rebecca Andrade and Russians Angelina Melnikova and Vladislava Urasova.
table tennis: The calculation for Dmitrij Ovtcharov is very simple. If he wins one of his remaining games, there is a medal. In the men’s semi-finals (from 9 a.m.), however, they face an extremely difficult task. The former world number one has to face Olympic champion Chinese world champion Ma Long from Rio.
