Rafael Nadal and Daniil Medvedev 2019 in Canada – but in Montreal

Russian tennis players actually did very well at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, with Elena Vesnina and Aslan Karatsev competing in the later mixed finals against gold medalists Andrey Rublev and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Late riser Daniil Medvedev went empty handed in the quarter-finals against Pablo Carreo Busta. And in two sentences lost to the Spaniard.

This was not because of the underground, Medvedev is known to be a fan of the hard court. The results at Roland Garros, where he reached the quarter-finals against Stefanos Tsitsipas, and at Wimbledon, where Medvedev reached the round of 16 and lost to Hubert Herkaz there, suggest that even the world number two may have felt comfortable. There are other surfaces. But Canada has something special for Medvedev. Here he reached the final of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament for the first time in 2019, although in Montreal.

Nadal not confident in Washington

The same can be said of Stefanos Tsitsipas, an Olympic participant who, like Daniil Medvedev, had not decorated Tokyo with precious metal. The Greek celebrated its 1000 Finals premiere in Toronto in 2018, and meanwhile won a tournament in this category in Monte Carlo this spring. Big deal in common? Tsitsipas 2018 and Medvedev both found their mentor in Rafael Nadal in the final a year later. And it’s back to the starting line for the current issue. In what condition? It can only be understated: Nadal won his first match against Jack Sock in Washington with great effort, while Lloyd Harris came in the round of 16.

Nadal could break his own record for the oldest champion in Toronto. Two years earlier, Majorcan was one of Canada’s winners, along with 33 Lenzens from Methuselah. But the signs can point to youth as well. And the local hero: Felix Auger-Aliasime Washington has broken almost nothing, but he can be expected to be a Wimbledon semifinalist in his own country as well Denis Shapovalov. However, Milos Raonic, who had to cancel his start due to injury, will be missing.
