in connection with the Riesenbrand “Dixie Fire” in California Many people have been reported missing since then. As Plumas County Police Chief Todd Johns announced Saturday, emergency services were searching for eight burned-out residents of the former Gold Rush town of Greenville in the north of the US state. Meanwhile the fire has also destroyed the small town of Canyondam.

The “Dixie Fire”, which erupted since mid-July, has grown into the third largest fire in California history. It is named after the road on which it started, probably from a tree that fell on a power line. The fire has destroyed more than 1,800 square kilometers of drought-stricken vegetation in northern California. Around 5000 firefighters have been deployed to douse the fire.

US officials ordered thousands of residents to be evacuated. Many of them fight back, some with cannons, as the Los Angeles Times reported on Saturday. In such cases, emergency services asked the remaining residents for the names of relatives who should be notified if they died in the fire.
