Floods in the north: At least 70 dead in Turkey

Heavy rains in the past few days have caused the worst flooding in years in the Turkish Black Sea region. At least 70 people have been killed and 47 are missing.

At least 70 people have died in floods in northern Turkey. State news agency Anadolu, quoting Turkey’s civil protection agency Afad, said 47 people were missing. Afad said rescue operations were underway in the affected areas.

Thousands of people were brought safely

Over the past few days, heavy rains have caused the region’s worst flooding in years. The provinces of Kastamonu, Sinop and Bartin are particularly affected. The flood caused several houses to collapse, bridges collapsed and thousands of people were evacuated.

State-affiliated news agency DHA reported that the dead were rescued from repeated collapses of buildings. At the same time, work is going on to clean the roads and buildings made of mud left by the floods.

According to experts, in addition to climate change, the straightening of rivers and the narrowing of the Aizen River are also a factor in the severe floods in the Bozkurt district.
