Windows 11: The standard browser must be selected individually for each file type

But what is the content of this criticism? First, after installing Windows 11, when you open an Internet link, as is the case with Windows 10, the General menu appears. Here the user can select his preferred standard browser, or leave it with the default Microsoft Edge browser. Problem: Apparently this is the only time I switch browsers. If the user doesn’t click “Always use this app” for Firefox, Chrome, and company, the default can only be adjusted later via Detour.

As a result, Microsoft will no longer group settings by software, but by file type. As one tweet suggests, the user is presented with a long list of page formats like HTML, PDF, HTTP and many more. Here you have to individually select which file type you want to use in order to be able to use the desired software for all link types.

Firefox, Chrome and Co Are Skeptics

Competitors like Mozilla, Opera and Vivaldi are skeptical. “We are increasingly concerned about the trend in Windows,” explains Selene Dekelman, for example, senior vice president of “The Verge” at Firefox. In their opinion, Windows 10 onwards does not require users to take the necessary steps to set up and maintain their browser settings. These constraints are confusing.

By the way, you can get a first look at Windows 11 with the “Inside Preview” version. Related downloads can be found under this text.
