Final group game for the German women’s national team at the IIHF World Cup 2021 in Canada: National coach Thomas Schadler’s team lost 1:2 (1:0, 0:2, 0:0) in their final group game last night. from Japan. Thus, the selection of the German Ice Hockey Federation closes the preliminary round of Group B with a third-place finish and now meets the Canadian team in the quarter-finals. Kirsten Spielberger scored for the DEB team.
Both teams started the first third of the game equally. The selection of national coach Thomas Shadler gave some decent chances in the power play, but without hitting the target. With more time in the offensive third, much of the German team’s work eventually paid off and so Kerstin Spielberger enabled Germany to take the lead in the 15th minute.
In the middle section, the Japanese quickly came back into the game and created a decent goal opportunity from the start, which they were eventually able to use with a face-off by Hanou Kubo to equalize 1:1. The German women’s national team faced penalty killings with too many shot blocks to be able to keep the score. However, Japan had a lot to play as time passed and so Hikaru Yamashita (30th minute) was able to single-handedly put his team in the lead. The DEB selection still had some good opportunities to level, but the team had to go into the second third break with a goal.
The last 20 minutes of the match between Japan and Germany were, initially, also from both sides. The Japanese continued to put pressure on the German team, but goalkeeper Jennifer Hares managed to capitalize on the opponents’ chances. By the end, DEB Selection could not manage to fight back in the Japanese women’s third and so the opposing team saved the victory over time.
Julia Zorn was awarded as the best player of the game.
National Coach Tom Shadler: “From my point of view, we played the first half of the game really well. From the second third onwards, the Japanese didn’t take it easy for us and put heavy pressure. Our team had some good chances, which we unfortunately didn’t use in the end. Nevertheless, the team fought till the end. We try to use tomorrow for regeneration and recharging the batteries. Another ice unit is on the agenda, which we definitely want to use in terms of the game against Canada. No matter what opponent we play against, we always want to win.”
Striker Nikola Eisenschmidt: “The Japanese women put a lot of pressure. Unfortunately, we then delivered two goals too quickly and became unbalanced. We tried to regain structure. In my opinion we never stopped playing, but in the end it wasn’t enough “
Forward Marie Delarabre: “We are now facing Canada in the quarter-finals. Of course, they are among the top countries. We will do everything we can to win this game. Everything is possible.”
