CALGARY (AP) – German ice hockey women suffered their second loss at the end of the preliminary round at the World Cup in Canada.
National coach Thomas Shadler’s team lost to Calgary Japan 1:2 (1:0, 0:2, 0:0) and thus missed out on second place in the group. Kerstin Spielberger (15th) gave the German team a 1-0 lead. Hane Kubo (23rd) and Hikaru Yamashita (30th) turned the game in favor of the Japanese with their goals.
In the last third, the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB) select could no longer use two additional positions after a time penalty for a hit for the Japanese. The German team, who qualified for the knockout rounds after victories against Hungary and Denmark, as well as losses against group winners Czech Republic, will take on Canada in the quarter-finals on Saturday (5:00 pm local time). Against hosts and Olympic runners-up, DEB selection is just an outsider.
