Canada November qualifying on artificial turf in Edmonton

Canada will play their home World Cup qualifiers against Costa Rica and Mexico next month at Commonwealth Stadium, a synthetic-paved stadium, in Edmonton, Alberta.

The North and Central American Football Confederation and the Caribbean Football Federation announced the two venues on Friday.

Commonwealth Stadium FieldTurf since 2010. The Canadian Football Association did not respond to an email from the Associated Press asking whether a temporary grass pitch would be installed.

Canada played the first two home qualifiers of the final at Toronto’s BMO Field, with a 1–1 draw against Honduras on 2 September and a 3–0 win against El Salvador on 8 September. It hosts Panama in Toronto on 13 October.

Canada, ranked 51st, announced their 27-man roster on Friday, 7 October to qualify for Mexico No. 9, three days later in games against 59th-placed Jamaica and 68th-placed Panama, a Toronto winger. Paired with Jacob Schaeffelberg. The 21-year-old, a former international, scored and scored two goals in Toronto’s 3-2 win over Cincinnati in Major League Soccer on Wednesday. He has scored two goals and four assists in his last four matches with Toronto.

Derek Cornelius of Greek Panetolikos and Charles Andreas Brim from FC Eindhoven in the Netherlands were also selected for the first time in World Cup qualification.

Canada, which is aiming for its first World Cup participation since 1986, is tied with the United States for second place in the eight-nation final, with each team playing 14 games. The top three teams will qualify for next year’s World Cup and the fourth-placed country will advance to the playoffs.
