Exhibition in Virtual Space

GIESSEN – “This is not an exhibition”: Under this title, eleven students from the Institute for Art Education (IFK) at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen invite you to a digital exhibition, modeled on the Belgian surrealist RenĂ© Margaret.

What is the authenticity and genuineness of an object? How do digital and social media affect our daily lives? How can analog works of art be incorporated into a virtual space? Having dealt with these questions intensively, students now present their work, which was created in summer semester 2021 as part of the project seminar “Exhibition Sphere AR/VR” under the direction of Adrien Wachholz. Based on RenĂ© Magritte’s work “The Betrayal of Images”, the work deals with questioning the relationship between image and reality, as well as objects and their terms. A famous 1929 painting by Magritte depicts a pipe entitled “This is not a pipe.”

Works are staged online in the simulated institute building as well as providing an exciting insight into the possibilities of curating in a virtual space. Versatile experiments with perception, creating reality and current technology await visitors on the open source platform Mozilla Hub. Admission is provided on the website https://salon.io/dika. In addition to the invite link, there’s even more insight into the artistic posts. The exhibition can be viewed until November 21: https://salon.io/dika.

The performing artists are Katarina Casas, Nia Kristina Cherkasov, Christina Jatzko, Sabine Kempken, Serene Necker, Jan Portig, Denise Scheer, Robin Stark, Ann-Kristin Weiger, Sebastian Weisman, Roxana Olivia Wittek.

To accompany the exhibition, a limited postcard edition with the works can be purchased from the IFK Secretariat for 3 euros. It can also be sent by post for 5 euros (order by email at [email protected]). The time of issue on the window of the printing workshop as well as the required contact form for the purchase can be found on the Institute’s website under the following link: https://www.uni-giessen.de/fbz/fb03/institutefb03/ IFK /Institute/Secretariat.
