PARIS (AP) — Dominic Koefer created the next surprise at the Tennis Masters tournament in Paris.
After his opening win against British Andy Murray, the 27-year-old Davis Cup professional won 6:3, 7:5 against Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, eleventh in the world rankings. Koefer used his first match ball after 1:38 hours and now meets Polish world number one Hubert Herkász.
The world number 58 had in fact already failed to qualify in the event, which concluded with around three million euros, but then slipped into the main field as a so-called lucky loser. In the first round, Koefer scored seven match points against Murray.
Olympic champion Alexander Zverev met Serb Dusan Lajovic after a bye in the first round in his opening match on Wednesday evening. Recently, the German number one won the title in Vienna and is therefore one of the favorites in the French capital.
