Ski Circus relies on snow. But it is becoming increasingly rare. At least not because of climate change. Almost a vicious cycle for alpine athletes competing in races in Europe as well as the United States and Canada.
Mikaela Shifrin knows this too. The 26-year-old extraordinary talent from the United States is currently concerned about his carbon footprint. “I have a problem with the fact that the sport requires so many trips,” the two-time Olympic champion told a media panel on Wednesday evening.
You experience the effects of climate change in your country. There it manifests itself through wildfires, snow storms or other destructive forces of nature. “That’s how the environment tells us we’re doing something terribly wrong,” Shifrin says. So she may think that one day she will end her career because of the climate.

FIS wants to make an impact
Ski legend Felix Neureuther recently commented on the climate problem in Blick. He is not happy that the ski season begins in October. “The game itself will do a great favor if it postpones the start,” he says. Also, because there was hardly any snow in Sölden initially. “In the future, skiing will have problems with reliability. Especially when it comes to climate change,” Neureuther says.
The International Ski Federation knows it has to act. Recently, FIS announced that it will become climate-positive by 2022. President Johann Elias would like to influence the stability of the game. (Mam)
