The volcano on the Spanish Canary island of La Palma again emits toxic gases. As a result, 30,000 people were not allowed to leave their homes for several hours.

The volcano became active again on Sunday after several days of slow activity. So the regional government on Monday morning ordered a lockdown for three places: “Close the doors, windows and shutters and prevent outside air from entering.”

40 percent of islanders are affected

About 30,000 people live in the three villages – about 40 percent of the island’s population. The regional government’s request to him was clear: “If possible, lock yourself in the farthest rooms.”

He advised all residents living in the open to move to the nearest building. Hours later, the authorities cleared everything again.

never ending disaster

For the first time in 50 years, the volcano erupted on 19 September. Huge amounts of lava flowed towards the sea and destroyed 1000 hectares of land and about 1500 buildings. There are always new explosions.

Since then about 7,000 people have had to leave their homes. Officials have estimated temporary damages of up to 700 million euros. Air traffic on the island had to be stopped several times.
