The number of suspected Omicron cases is increasing significantly in the Freiburg region - Freiburg

Omicron is now expanding to Freiburg and the region as well. On Tuesday, the health department had registered eleven suspected cases. Now this number is already 95 cases in the city and district.

Officially, there is still only one laboratory-confirmed case in Freiburg with the virus mutation Omicron. But there are more and more suspicious cases. While the number was 11 on Tuesday, 54 a day later on Wednesday and 95 suspected cases on Thursday were also registered by the Health Department. It takes up to two weeks for sequencing results to be available in the laboratory.

Of the 95 cases, 63 come from the city of Freiburg, 32 from the district of Breisgau-Hochswarzwald. “These are mainly young people. Some of them have not been vaccinated, but some of them have been increased,” said district office spokesman Mathias Fetterer. So far, there are no stable cases among them. Those affected had common symptoms such as cough and headache. Even people who have been vaccinated three times have a higher risk of infection with Omicron. “Hence the urgent appeal before the turn of the year: please absolutely abstain from gatherings with multiple people and minimize contacts,” Fetterer said.

After a drop in numbers before Christmas, there are now more people infected overall: in Freiburg, the number of active cases in the district from 1395 to 2024 increased significantly within a week from 1349 to 1945.
