The Max Planck Institute for Human Development (MPIB) is an international research institute that investigates the processes of human development and education. Scientists from different disciplines – such as psychology, sociology, history, computer and information science or economics – work together in interdisciplinary projects. Research is strongly data-driven and uses a variety of study designs (eg longitudinal studies, cross-sectional studies, experimental designs) and methodological approaches to data collection (eg structural imaging methods, surveys). This results in a data set between a few MB and a few TB. The institute strives for better visibility of research data in relation to ongoing and completed projects as well as better access to the underlying data sets for internal and external researchers. Important goals are also reproducibility and an open science.

The following project positions are to be filled with immediate effect for software-technical implementation of cross-house research data management infrastructure for a period of two years with the possibility of extension, in the “Library and Scientific Information” sector: Project Staff Member (M/F/D) for Development and Integration of IT Systems for Research Data Management (Pay Group 13 TVOD, Part-time with 19.5 hours per week).

As the job holder, you are the main responsible contact person for all research areas in the Institute with respect to IT-technical questions of research data management. You are responsible for the technical decisions and actions of development/implementation/integration of a cross-company research data management infrastructure, in constant close coordination with the Institute and all relevant stakeholders in the MPG. In this way, you can actively help shape and promote change for the sustainable use of research data at the interface between research and infrastructure.

Work

  • Develop and implement an internal record, storage and administration infrastructure (front and back end including interfaces for data transfer to and from external systems) for study, data and meta information
  • Integration of existing research data management solutions into an interdisciplinary infrastructure
  • Technical evaluation of existing tools for research data management
  • Development and implementation of technical solutions to guarantee the authenticity and long-term availability of research data
  • Technological development and implementation of workflows for making selected databases available to third parties (also through internal infrastructure)
  • Development of solutions for the permanent storage of research data

Conditions

  • Full academic university degree (at least a bachelor’s degree or comparable degree) in computer science or a relevant subject
  • Experience developing web-based applications (e.g. Django, JavaScript/React)
  • Experience in dealing with research-related programming languages ​​(eg Python, R, Matlab)
  • Data processing experience in a research related context
  • Cloud-based data storage
  • Ability to conduct independent research as well as use and create user and developer documentation on technical topics in German and English
  • Experience dealing with relational databases
  • Very well written and spoken German and English
  • Ability to work independently as well as work together in flexible team structures
  • Distinguished Service Orientation in Thinking and Acting

  • Knowledge of relevant data formats (CSV, JSON, Excel, SPSS, R) and metadata standards (eg BIDS, Dublin Core, DDI, Datasite)
  • An overview of common software solutions for filing and describing research data (eg DataVerse, DSpace, OSF)
  • Experience in conceptualizing and implementing IT projects
