After a 1–1 draw against Spain at the start of the tournament, national coach Martina Vos-Tecklenburg changed her starting XI to seven positions: only Feldkamp, Buhl, Brand and captain Maguel were again in the starting line-up.
A set piece keeps Canada ahead
The game started badly for the DFB Women, as Canada took the lead with the first chance: Gilles went into a corner from the right to make it 1–0 (7th). It was generally the first half with few scoring opportunities. The Voss-Tecklenburg team could have had a good chance, but were not awarded a penalty after Giles blocked Magal’s shot from his hand. Someone could point the point here.
Otherwise, Germany struggled on the offensive for a long time. However, shortly before the break, there were two good shots: Buhl’s shot was deflected by Sheridan (42′) and Feldkamp went wide (45-+2). So Canadians moved to cabins with narrow ledges.
Berger in luck – Gwyn missed out on compensation
Soon after the restart, Prince had a good chance to make it 2–0, but missed (47th). Goalkeeper Berger was lucky when his emergency brake went off without a penalty just before the edge of the penalty area (52′). During the second half, the DFB women got into the encounter better and better. Dongas’ long-range shot was too central (67′). Substitute Gwinn became more dangerous, and after a good pass from Anyomi, his low shot was saved by goalkeeper Sheridan (71′). The German women threw everything forward, but the equalizer should not be successful.
This means that the DFB Women have only one point after two games in the mini-tournament. It continues with the last game of the competition against hosts England on Wednesday evening (8.30 pm).
