International launch: Tesla expands full self-driving beta to Canada

Tesla has officially started offering the full self-driving beta for users in Canada with immediate effect. This is now the start of the international expansion of Tesla’s autonomous driver assistance system.

This “Full Self-Driving Beta”, abbreviated FSD beta testing, has been available in the United States from the end of 2020. However, Tesla doesn’t have every driver who clicks on Autonomous Driver Assistance readiness when ordering their vehicle to be tested. Before that, there’s a type of risk assessment that Tesla uses to select drivers.

The FSD software enables the vehicle to be driven autonomously to the destination entered in the vehicle’s navigation system. However, the human driver must remain alert at all times to intervene if necessary.

Nearly 60,000 vehicles are already in beta testing

Since the responsibility lies with the driver and not the Tesla system, despite the “full self-driving” name, it is still a level two driver assistance system and can therefore be used on public roads. Tesla has been releasing new software updates for the FSD beta program regularly for months. In addition, more and more drivers are being added to the program. According to the automaker, it had about 60,000 Tesla owners in the FSD beta program in Q4 2021 – and all of them so far only in the USA.

This is now changing with the expansion of the program. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has long promised this expansion, and now the time has finally come. The first vehicles are considered in Canada, with the latest software update to version 2022.4.5. With the new version, owners are now able to request the full self-driving beta via request. After the application, the approval process begins, in which Tesla assigns a “safety rating” to the user’s daily driving behavior.

If the ratings are good, Tesla can provide them with FSD beta software. There is no right to beta test. Musk already confirmed that Tesla tried out the FSD beta software with about 60 vehicles in an early internal test in Canada. With the official release, one can expect that the number of test vehicles will increase significantly, as now everyone who has purchased an FSD package with their vehicle order can apply.
