  • In Group C of the preliminary round of the ice hockey tournament, the favorites win with Sweden and Finland.
  • Canada and USA celebrate big wins in Group A.

Group C: Sweden 3-2 Latvia

Two-time Olympic champions Sweden were under pressure despite a 3-0 lead in the opening round of Group C against Latvia. Lucas Wallmark distinguished himself as a double goal scorer (10th/34th). 2–0 in the 21st minute was an entirely “Swiss” production: Zug’s Anton Lander completed the preparatory work from his club colleagues Karl Klingberg and Mathias Brom (Davos). There was also an aid note by Henrique Tomernes of Geneva. For the Latvians, who used three other NL players in addition to SCL keeper Evars Punnenovs, Rainars Krestenbergs (37th) and Nikolaj Jeljeevs (47th) shortened the lead. Sweden’s keeper Lars Johansson pulled off a narrow win with several strong saves.

Group C: Finland 6-2 Slovakia

Despite a false start, Finland secured a clear start victory over Slovakia. Sakari Maninen, Langnaus Harry Pessonen and Miro Altynen took a 3:1 lead in the first period to take a 0:1 lead. Mannin became the first hat-trick taker of the tournament with two more goals. The Swiss David Obergesser served as one of the linemen.

Group A: Canada 5-1 Germany

Four years after a sensational silver medal in Pyeongchang, Germany started the Olympic tournament with a clear defeat. The DEB team suffered a 5-1 loss on Thursday against record Olympic champions Canada. Alex Grant, Ben Street and Geneva striker Daniel Vinnik gave Canada a 3-0 lead in the 11th minute. Along with Maxim Noro (ZSC Lions), another National League player joins the list of goalscorers for the “Maple Leaves”.

Group A: USA 8-0 China

Co-favorites USA started the Winter Games with a thumping victory against the hosts. However, the American team struggled for a long time and really gained momentum in the middle of the game. After 25 minutes the favorites were only 1–0 ahead of Noah Cates, Brian O’Neill and Sean Farrell to give the United States a 4–0 lead until the second siren. In the final section, the superior Americans (55:29 shot on goal) began to perform with 4 goals. In the second group game, the United States will face Canada on Saturday afternoon at Swiss time.
