With the new site in Canada, BASF is further expanding production of cathode materials in North America. Additional systems for primary products, recycling and metal refining are also possible.

BASF has signed an agreement to secure a property in Baconcore, Quebec, Canada. The chemical conglomerate will establish a production site for cathode materials and battery recycling to support North American automobile manufacturers in the switch to electromobility. The new location therefore provides ample space for expansion to up to 100 kt of cathode material per year. There is also potential for a fully integrated supply of starting products for cathode materials.

The site also connects to BASF’s global metals sourcing network, with a refinery for nickel and cobalt intermediates and the recycling of all battery metals (including lithium). The location on the St. Lawrence River is known as CO. should enable the use of hydropower to reduce2– Minimize the footprint of products. BASF aims to start production in 2025.
