Skip Silvana Tirinzoni’s team celebrates victories against Sweden and Scotland at the start of the World Cup at Prince George.
CC Aarau’s curlers have recovered well from the disappointment and missing out on medals at the Olympic Games. At the World Championships in Canada, Skip Silvana Tirinzoni, Alina Patz, Carol Howald and Melanie Barbezat experienced a perfect start. After a clear 12:1 victory over Scotland, the Swiss quartet also maintained their clean sheet in 8:7 against Sweden.
once small, once clear
Their results were similar, but vastly different, with Switzerland winning the first two games in the round robin. Especially in the second game against Sweden, the Swiss had to open their best curling. The decision was not made until the last stone in the 10th end: Patz – who was partly to blame for a three-way home to Sweden’s side in the 6th – took responsibility and pulled two Swedish stones out of the danger zone. Swiss to win. It was a successful retaliation for the loss in the Bronze Games in Beijing.
Against the Scots, the Swiss women decided 3 to 6 with the final stone after a two-man home at the other end. They were able to steal 2 stones 3 times, and 4 of them in round 5. The Swiss would not overestimate their success, as the Scots could only compete in three due to two failures. The standard skip Rebecca Morrison was also not available.
