Canada in World Cup for the first time in 36 years

Vienna – Monday, 03/28/2022, 00:03

Canada qualified for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with an easy 4-0 win over Jamaica in Toronto on Sunday.

Cyle Larin put the hosts ahead in the 13th minute, who would have enough points for a World Cup ticket. Tajon Buchanan (44th) took a 2-0 lead before the break. In the end, Junior Hoylet first made it 3-0 (83rd). Mariyappa’s own goal ensures the final score (89th).

Canada can no longer be eliminated from the top 3 in the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying group. The Maple Leafs top the table with 28 points ahead of the US and Mexico (22 points each). Costa Rica is in fourth place with 19 points.

North Americans are also ending a 36-year drought. Canada was last in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.
