These are Nau.ch's dream groups in the World Cup

Groups for the 2022 World Cup will be drawn in Qatar on Friday (6 pm). This is what the nine editors’ wish lists for Swiss Natty look like.

needed in short

  • The Swiss national team is in pot 2 before the World Cup draw.
  • The groups will be drawn up in Qatar on Friday.
  • The sports editors at Nau.ch have put together a wish list.

Excitement increased for the Swiss national team on Friday! Teams will be formed in Qatar for the 2022 World Cup, which begins on November 21 in the desert state. Who will coach Murat Yakin’s team?

Balls will be drawn from the lottery drum on Friday at 6 pm Swiss time. Although before that the sports editors of Nau.ch can put together their dream group.

Pascal Moser, Game Editor

The very bitter ending must be avenged in the 2014 World Cup round of 16. Lionel Messi is said to have had a hard time with the Alvedi/Akanji duo and failed to point for Yann Sommer in extra time. In the end we win 1-0. That would be the landscape of my dreams.

I would also like to see Japan in the Swiss national team. A strong team with promising players like Takefusa Kubo (Mallorca), Takehiro Tomiyasu (Arsenal) and Takumi Minamo (Liverpool). Attractive rival who will probably be friendly to us.

My last wish is Canada, which has qualified for the World Cup for the first time since 1986. While we don’t usually give a chance in ice hockey, I believe that Switzerland has the edge in football.

group: Argentina, Switzerland, Japan, Canada

Christoph Bohlen, Deputy Sports Director

Anything other than wishing the weakest opponent from the pot one would be foolish. That’s why the Swiss national team meets hosts Qatar in my place. From pot three my wish would be Senegal.

I really like African football – and you usually play enough against European teams. From the fourth pot it could be Ecuador, so that completes the continent puzzle. If Peru still reaches the final, I will swap Ecuador for Peru.

group: Qatar, Switzerland, Senegal, Ecuador (Peru)

Matthias Neuhaus, Sports Editor

Matches against the homeland of football are always special, especially in the World Cup. Nati has been looking forward to a win against England for more than 40 years. Why shouldn’t all locations in Qatar work?

Morocco and Ecuador are two defeatable but attractive rivals. Group victory will definitely be possible in this nakshatra.

group: England, Switzerland, Morocco, Ecuador

Andrea Shupback, Sports Editor

In the last World Cup, Waylon Behrami completely signed Neymar of Brazil. Now it is the turn of the next PSG Superstar. In what would probably be his last tournament, Messi was angry with Granit Xhaka for 90 minutes. We still have a score to finish the match in the Round of 16 of 2014.

Serb from pot three, please. Attractive – and feasible. This time we celebrate a clear victory without a double eagle.

Canadians would also be a good draw. Hopefully the FCB wing Liam Miller will be used a bit more in the World Cup than in qualifying.

group: Argentina, Switzerland, Serbia, Canada

Mathias Kenz, Sports Editor (and Austrian)

My ideal World Cup group consists of Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic and North Macedonia – then we could all comfortably watch together in front of the television.

Are you looking forward to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar?
