Indigenous Canadians in the Pope - Vatican News

Representatives of Canada’s “First Nations” have been holding talks in the Vatican since the beginning of the week. This Thursday, Pope Francis received a group of about twenty indigenous people.

The Vatican’s statement informing the audience is exactly three lines long. It mentions that the natives were accompanied by some Canadian bishops. As the statement recalls, this week is Francis’ third meeting with guests from what is now Canada: on Monday he received representatives of the Metis and the Inuit.

The statement speaks of an “environment of listening and closeness” as far as this Thursday’s encounter is concerned. On Friday, the Pope will receive all three groups together for an audience, with live images broadcast outside. Francis will also deliver a speech. The audience will be broadcast live with commentary in German from 12 noon by Radio Vatican and Vatican News.
