Roaming in the EU will be free for the next ten years – the EU countries have decided this. This means there are no other charges for surfing and making phone calls to other EU countries.
Mobile phone customers can make calls, send text messages and surf the Internet in other EU countries for the next ten years at no additional cost. This has been made possible with the expansion of so-called roaming, for which EU countries have cleared the way, as they announced on Monday.
The structure of free roaming was also agreed upon by the Parliament of the European Union and various governments. After MEPs had already agreed, official approval from EU states was still missing for the regulation to take effect.
from 1st July
This comes into effect from 1 July and replaces existing requirements. As of June 15, 2017, roaming charges are not charged in 27 EU countries as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
The agreement also provides for changes to the existing rules. Wherever possible the same quality of services should be available to consumers abroad.
Ursula Pachl of the European Consumers Association Bayuk said that one of the biggest success stories for consumers in the EU continues with this growth and improvement.
She criticized that messages and phone calls between EU countries can still lead to high charges if they are not covered by roaming regulation. This may be the case, for example, if you use a mobile phone with a German number to make a connection call to another EU country.
