Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a telephone conversation with his Canadian counterpart Melanie Jolie.
On the call, Wang said that China continues to view and treat China-Canada relations from a strategic and long-term height.
Wang Yi also presented a three-point proposal on bilateral relations: First, Canada should view China fairly and positively, and pursue a level-headed and pragmatic China policy. Second, the two countries should respect each other’s core interests and not create new barricades for bilateral relations. Third, Canada must maintain its independence and self-reliance and eliminate unnecessary foreign interference.
Jolie responded that Canada respects China’s sovereignty and system of state, as well as independent decisions made by the Chinese people. Canada commends China’s tremendous achievements in development, especially in the area of poor relief. Canada intends to gradually return bilateral relations to a normal development path and build on consolidated bilateral relations.
The two sides also discussed the Ukraine issue.
