Apple , Long-term goal of circular economy: Apple products made from 20% recycled content

Apple is increasingly using recycled materials in its products. As the company recently announced, more gold, tungsten and cobalt are now being used for the second time.

Apple has released its annual environmental progress report. This shows that the company has stepped up its efforts to use recycled materials. Until recently, about 20% of Apple products were made from reclaimed materials, the company said in a press release. Explained, Apple has recently been using significantly more recycled tungsten, cobalt and gold, and secondarily rare earths are increasingly being used as well.

Many of these materials are either mined in China, creating an ongoing geo-strategic issue, or are mined in Africa, raising human rights issues that even Apple cannot easily address . Another has gone ahead with aluminum: the raw material here accounts for recycled raw materials in about 59% of the equipment manufactured in 2021.

Apple strives for resource-neutral manufacturing

While one is already striving to make their supply chain climate-neutral by 2030, the same should be done with regard to the use of other resources. Apple writes about:

Lisa Jackson, Vice President of Environment, Policy, said, “As people around the world celebrate Earth Day, we are making real progress in our efforts to fight the climate crisis and may one day make our products without taking any raw materials out of the earth. ” , and social initiatives at Apple. “Our rapid pace of innovation helps our teams leverage today’s products for tomorrow’s products.

However, the goal of a true circular economy is still a long way off and will not be achieved by Apple in the near future either.
