It’s been five years since the Switch was released, but Nintendo has finally added a Switch counterpart to the popular Wii sports. Released on April 29 for consoles, the Nintendo Switch sports six different games that use motion-controlled Joy-Cons.

Unfortunately, the only way to get more stuff and items for your character is to earn points – which is only possible by competing against other players online. So do you need a Nintendo Online subscription to play Nintendo Switch sports?

Unlike Wii Sports, Nintendo Switch Sports has an online play option that lets you play a variety of games with strangers. Fortunately, though, this isn’t the only way to play the game.

If you don’t want to match up with others online and just want to have the fun of playing alone, you can play completely locally, alone or at a party with friends, without an annual subscription.

However, if you’re hoping to earn points that can be used to unlock cool items for your character to wear, you’ll have to play online. Technically, you’ll need a Nintendo Online subscription if you want to play against others in online mode – but there’s a solution if you don’t want to commit to a subscription.

If you want to earn points, you can still select the game’s online option, but without a Nintendo Online subscription, switch to trial mode instead.

In this mode, you compete online against low-level CPUs instead of strangers. While this may not be the most impressive experience or the most reliable way to earn points, it is an easy solution to earn points without purchasing a Nintendo Online subscription.

On the other hand, if you’re considering purchasing an annual Nintendo Online subscription, it costs $19.99 for an individual subscription or $49.99 for an expansion that includes N64 games.
