BERLIN (DPA/TMN) — Kindle e-books purchased from Amazon usually cannot legally be converted to format so that they can be read on readers from other manufacturers. On the other hand, e-books sold by all other providers in the epub format can very well be converted to the Kindle format, as long as they are not protected by digital rights management (DRM).
The open source program does such a conversion Caliber, an e-book management and library software. And now Amazon has it too announcedTo convert epub format to kindle format for its customers if necessary.
Kindle by Email
To do this, one has to email the DRM-free epub books to the email address assigned to the Kindle reader. This function is called «send to kindle, Your own Kindle reader’s e-mail address is in an Amazon customer account.
It also works with text documents (doc, rtf, txt), PDF, websites (html), image files (jpeg, gif, png, nmp) and e-books in Mobi formats. However, mobile support is set to end at the end of 2022. Transfer apps not ready yet
You can also use the “Send to Kindle” apps instead of e-mail transfer to transfer files to your Kindle device in any of the formats listed. Exception epub books: According to Amazon, apps shouldn’t be able to process them until the end of 2022.
