Bad memories of the World Cup in Finland? Alarm bells should sound for some Swiss ice hockey fans. Eventually, in 2013, when the title fights took place in Helsinki and Stockholm, Switzerland sensationally became the vice world champion under coach Sean Simpson. At that time, however, the “Silver Heroes” never set foot on Finnish soil. All games, both in the preliminary round and the knockout phase, were played by the national team in the Swedish capital.

Switzerland’s appearance at the World Cup in Finland certainly has a history. We watch Naati’s performance from last few days.

2012: A Tournament to Forget

Switzerland’s last World Cup memories of Helsinki date back to a year before the 2013 final. Even then, the co-hosts were Finland and Sweden. In 2012, however, the national team completed its full preliminary round in Helsinki. What began quickly degenerates into a failed adventure.

Simpson’s team began the tournament with two victories against Kazakhstan (5–1) and Belarus (3–2), before Switzerland lost to Finland (2–5) and Canada (2–3). So far, so good, the national team’s timetable for the quarter-finals was still in place. However, this changed after a 2:4 loss against France in the 5th preliminary round game. Switzerland did not recover from this setback, eventually losing to Slovakia (0:1) and USA (2:5). With only 6 points out of a possible 21, the national team clearly missed the target quarter-finals.

2003: No feat in the quarter-finals

19 years ago, Finland acted as the sole host of the World Cup. The game was played in 3 cities Turku, Tampere and Helsinki. Switzerland finished the preliminary round in Tampere in second place after defeats against Russia (2:5) and victories against the United States (1:0) and Denmark (6:2).

In the intermediate round, coach Ralph Kruger’s team held the upper hand against Latvia (4:2). Although Canada (0:2) and Sweden (2:5) were strong then, the Swiss still won the quarterfinal ticket. But it was eliminated for the national team in the last 8 rounds. The Slovaks won the quarterfinals 3–1 in Helsinki.

1991: 1 year after ascension

Like the 2003 World Cup, the 1991 tournament also took place in Turku, Tampere and Helsinki. Switzerland had won the B World Cup a year earlier and were promoted. The result in the “Upper House” was the 7th and final place for Nati. The world champion was made up of 4 nations in the championship round.
