Vatican confirms Pope's visit to Canada

Francis on his way to Canada: Matteo Bruni, the head of the Vatican’s press office, has now officially confirmed the previously announced visit. Accordingly, the Pope will travel to Edmonton, Quebec and Iqaluit from July 24 to 30.

“At the invitation of civil and church officials and indigenous communities, Pope Francis will make an apostolic visit to Canada,” Bruni said in a brief statement to reporters. He said the itinerary of the visit and further details would be announced in the coming weeks.

At a meeting with Canadian natives at the Vatican in early April, the Pope announced that he intended to visit Canada at the end of July. He said at the time that he wanted to be with the natives of Canada for the feast of St. Anne on 26 July. He ended his address with this comment: “See you again in Canada!” Members of the Canadian delegation mentioned several times that the Pope had been invited to Canada.

misbehavior in church-run schools

The backdrop of a trip to Canada and talks at the Vatican in April are the scandals that have emerged in recent years about abuse and abuse in schools for Indigenous children, so-called residential schools. State-financed institutions were often run by church sponsors. The mass graves of children, which testify to the pathetic condition in these boarding schools, raised the alarm.
