Upper Bavarian car supplier Webasto was more than proud to be selected as the supplier for several roof variants of the off-road vehicle in 2018. “It is fantastic to be a supplier to such an icon,” Webasto CEO Holger Engelmann told Handelsblatt. The company was expecting sales of 2 billion euros for the full term of the model.

But the big order turned into a disaster. The new Webasto plant in Detroit opened late, forcing Ford to postpone first deliveries and replace thousands of hardtop roofs due to quality problems. The failed product launch cost Webasto 200 million euros and contrary to plans, the company suffered losses last year.
