The group stage is over at the Ice Hockey World Championships in Finland. The following quarter-final pairings will take place on Thursday:

  • Switzerland – USA, 7:20 pm in Helsinki (live in SRF Zwei and Sport app)

As for the group winners, Switzerland is the favorite paper against the Americans, who have made a mixed impression so far this tournament. The victory against Sweden was impressive. But there were defeats against Finland and the Czech Republic. Austria was also defeated after extra time.

  • 15:20 in Sweden – Canada, Tampere

Like the Olympic Games in February, the two hockey giants will clash in the quarter-finals. In Beijing, Sweden won 2–0 with two goals in the final 10 minutes, only to be defeated by a Russian selection in the semi-finals.

  • Finland – Slovakia, 19:20 in Tamperes

Olympic champions against Olympic bronze medalists: Despite the exciting starting position, Finland’s progress in the home World Cup will be anything but surprising. Coach Jukka Jalonen’s team only lost to Sweden in the group stage, and that too only in a penalty shoot-out.

  • Germany – Czech Republic, 15:20 in Helsinki

The Germans have a tough job after making it to the semi-finals last year. Meanwhile, the Czech Republic lost the quarter-final dress rehearsal against Finland, while Toni Söderholm’s team took one point from an unbeaten Switzerland. Czech Lakers forward Roman Cervenka is second only to Denis Malgin in the World Cup scorers’ list (3 goals, 8 assists).
