World Cup in Qatar - Canada missed preliminary qualification

Status: 03/25/2022 10:55 AM

At least for the time being, Canada has missed a decisive step towards the Football World Cup in Qatar.

Having lost on Thursday (03/24/2022, local time) to Costa Rica, the leader of the qualifiers in North and Central America, despite a 0:1 (0:1) superiority, just one point would have been enough for a ticket to the World Cup. The Canadians can now get it against Jamaica on Sunday or in Panama on Wednesday.

This will be his first appearance at the World Cup in 36 years and his second so far.

No goals for USA against Mexico

Mexico and the USA took a small step towards Qatar with a 0–0 draw in the chase. Both maintained a three-point lead over fourth-placed Costa Rica, going into the final two games on points, still qualifying for the Intercontinental Playoffs against a representative from Oceania.

Canada has long been outnumbered

Canada, who played without Alfonso Davies from FC Bayern Munich, had to play down a man for almost an hour after a yellow-red card for defender Marc-Anthony Kaye (34th), Celso Borges just before the break. Scored (45th + 1) the deciding blow. Davis continued to miss due to swelling in his heart muscle.

Coach John Hardman said, “We can take our fate into our own hands. We will take care of it on Sunday and if we don’t make it we will make it in Panama. We will go to Qatar.”
