Musk talks employees – and threatens layoffs

Elon Musk spoke to Twitter employees for the first time since the acquisition was announced. During the question-and-answer session, he pondered the existence of extraterrestrials – and hinted at job cuts at the company.

Elon Musk is setting the bar high for Twitter. In the first question-and-answer session with US Short Message Service employees, the Tesla boss announced a goal to increase the number of users to at least one billion. Twitter has 229 million right now.

At the same time, Musk, who announced a $44 billion acquisition on Twitter in April, wants to handle growth with fewer employees. According to Forbes, in the video conference, the world’s richest man said, in his opinion, job cuts are necessary. Like an austerity plan: “Right now, costs exceed income.” But anyone who is relevant to the company has nothing to fear. Twitter had 7,500 employees at the end of last year. Facebook comes in at 45,000 for comparison.

This was Musk’s first time answering questions from the Twitter team. He arrived ten minutes late for the video conference and pondered over the existence of extraterrestrials. Twitter should help with “civilization and awareness,” said Musk, who otherwise gave few details about the acquisition, which made several headlines recently.
