At the start of the World Cup Decathlon in Eugene, German athletes gave a mixed performance. Defending champion Niklas Kaul finished more than 100 meters in the long jump and slightly below his potential. Canadian Olympic champion Damien Warner is in front, the best DLV athlete World Cup debutante is Leo Neugebauer. Events of the Decathlon in Eugene at a glance.

11.17 seconds over 100m and 7.36m in long jump – Niklas Kaul’s personal best in a decathlon. In Eugene, he started the world championship event with a time of 11.22 seconds and 7.09 m. The defending champions, whose season was marred by injuries, have been a bit behind on their performances at the World Cup in Doha in 2019. However, Kaul traditionally has better cards on Second Decathlon Day when “their” technical subjects are in the program. In the overall standings, Mainz’s man is currently only in 20th place.

“In the first discipline, the event was neither won nor lost,” national coach Christopher Hollmann said shortly after the 100 meters race at the ZDF. He would not have changed his mind after the long jump.

Damien Warner is clearly in the lead

After the first two disciplines out of ten, Canadian Olympic champion Damien Warner clearly leads the field of 22 athletes. He ran the 100 meters fastest (10.27 meters), as well as a set of 7.87 meters in the long jump. This gives him 2,057 points in the overall standings. France’s world record holder Kevin Meyer (10.62 sec/7.54 m) has 1,892 points on his account – sixth in the intermediate rankings.

Leo Neugebauer ranked ninth as best German

The best German before the shot put (9.10 pm CEST) is still 22-year-old World Cup debutant Leo Neugebauer (11.07 sec/7.46 m) in ninth place with 1,770 points. Kai Kazmirek, third at the World Championships in London 2017, is 14th (1,751) after 11.19 seconds over the 100m and 7.49m in the long jump. Tim Nowak (11.43 sec/7.13 m) is currently the weakest in the German decathlon quartet with 1,612 points.

Leo Neugebauer can be satisfied with the start of his first World Championship event.
