Pope Francis speaks on a plane to Canada on World Grandparents Day

In a brief speech on his flight to Canada on Sunday, Pope Francis recalled that it would be a “journey of penance”, especially in view of the abuse of indigenous peoples. The Pope also spoke of World Grandparents Day, which he celebrated for the first time last year.

“Today we need: back to the grandparents – I say this as a leitmotif – in the sense that what young people need to get in touch with their grandparents is to return to them, to their roots. To return, not to stay there, no, but to be carried is like a tree that takes strength from its roots and carries it into flowers and fruits,” the Pope said in his brief address.

As a religious – the Pope is a Jesuit – he also wanted to remember “old religious men and women”. Francis referred to them as “the ‘grandparents’ of the dignified life” and urged: “Please do not hide them, they are the wisdom of a religious family; And new men and women religious, novices, can come into contact with them. , They will become the giver of life experiences to all of us which will help us a lot to move forward.”

“Each of us has a grandfather and a grandmother, some are dead, others are still alive,” concluded the Holy Fathers. “We got a lot of things from him, especially the story. Thanks!”

Pope Francis will land in Edmonton at around 7:20 pm (11:20 am local time). Apart from a reception, in which no papal address is planned, there is nothing else on the schedule on Sunday. On Monday, the Pope will meet with groups of indigenous people both in the morning and at noon (local time).
