AMD Ryzen 7000 and AM5 motherboards will launch this fall with the first consumer PCIe 5.0 SSDs. Corsair is now providing a first look at the new SSD generation: the Corsair MP700 SSD with PCIe 5.0 in M.2 format.

like a corsair a website For manufacturer’s components compatible with the new AMD platform, the Corsair MP700 will support PCIe 5.0 x4 and NVMe 2.0. At its peak, the M.2 SSD reads data at 10,000 MB/s and writes at 9,500 MB/s. With the latest of this generation, converting it to 10Gb/s and 9.5Gb/s makes sense.

In a graphic, Corsair compares the performance of the MP700 with PCIe 5.0 to the MP600 Pro XT (tested) with PCIe 4.0 and the MP510 (tested) with PCIe 3.0. While maximum throughput practically doubles when moving from the MP510 to the MP600 Pro XT, the MP700’s gain is relatively small.

It remains to be seen whether this is due to the limitations of the SSD or the platform itself. SSD controller maker Phison recently demonstrated a prototype M.2 SSD with the Phison E26 on a Ryzen 7000 system that “only” achieved around 10 GB/s. on the last demo (Video) E26 manages over 12 Gb/s.

It’s a clear assumption that Corsair will be using the Phison E26 for the MP700. Because Phison chips were already used in the MP600 family and also in the MP510.

AMD is partnering with Phison to launch the new AM5 platform. Ultimately, both benefit from PCIe 5.0 support as an additional selling point. The first PCIe 5.0 SSD, AMD Ryzen 7000 and associated AM5 mainboards with the Phison E26 are expected to go on sale early in September.

In addition to Corsair, other manufacturers like Gigabyte, MSI or Seagate will jump on the bandwagon. Manufacturers Apacer and Zadak, less well-known in this country, have already shown the design of PCIe 5.0 SSDs with coolers in the M.2 format, but they have promised higher transfer rates of up to 13 Gb/s. The Micron subsidiary is also looking to join under the brand Crucial. It remains to be seen what control technology Micron uses.
