Truck driver protests in Canada: Bridge on US border blocked again

Truck drivers have been blocking the border crossing between Canada and the United States for several days to protest against COVID-19. The police tried to clear the bridge. But the problem has not been resolved yet.

After a week-long blockade, the situation on the Ambassador Bridge between Canada and the US has eased somewhat. Several demonstrators who were demonstrating there against vaccination rules and coronavirus measures, calmly exited the bridge as Canadian police began evacuations on Saturday.

The feared violent confrontation seemed absent. But in the evening some people were still blocking the road leading to the bridge. Others came to support him. Those taking part in the action blocked the bridge with trucks, pickups and cars for several days. Most ignored the court’s order to leave the bridge on Friday.

important traffic routes

In addition to coronavirus measures and mandatory vaccinations in Canada, protesters led by a group of truck drivers denounce Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s liberal government. They also blocked the city of Ottawa with their trucks.

However, with the Ambassador Bridge, they crippled one of the most important transportation routes between the United States and Canada. Automobile manufacturers and suppliers were particularly affected. Suppliers and lawyers for the City of Windsor near the bridge argued in court that the blockade was causing undue economic damage to the city and the region. Supporters of the protest argued that stopping the action would affect their right to protest peacefully.

state of emergency declared

Ontario Prime Minister Doug Ford declared a state of emergency on Friday because of protesters. Anyone found blocking roads or bridges could face a fine of up to $100,000 and up to one year in prison.

“We urge all protesters to behave with law and peace,” police tweeted on Saturday ahead of the eviction. Later it was said that the cooperation of the protesters was welcomed. Pedestrians should continue to avoid the bridge. No one was arrested.

copycats in many countries

Truckers’ protests drew attention far beyond Canada’s borders, with similar actions taking place in France, the Netherlands and New Zealand. In Paris, police on Saturday stopped at least 500 vehicles trying to enter the French capital.
