Where is Zugspitze?
Geneva – This has never happened before! The world’s longest passenger train made a record journey in Prada (Switzerland) on Saturday. The Rhaetian Railway’s (RhB) special train is an incredible 1906 meters long and offers 4550 seats in 100 wagons – a world record!
The world-record train of about 3000 tonnes left Prada station at 2:20 pm to travel along beautiful valleys, mountains and gorges for almost an hour. The route is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most beautiful in Europe. 22 tunnels, 48 bridges and the well-known Landwasser Viaduct (photo) are on the route leading to Alveneau (Graubünden), where the train ended.
The seven engine drivers and 21 technicians on board made it easy, only to sharpen their locks to 35 on the demanding route. Bizarre: A field telephone was installed so that those responsible on the train could communicate with each other – along a cable about two kilometers long. This ensured that all train drivers could apply the brakes or accelerate at the same time.
There were 150 invited guests on board, including politicians and some journalists. Thousands of train enthusiasts rejoiced, with the route en route for a record journey of around 25 kms.
The reason for the record attempt was an anniversary. The Swiss Railway Association (SBB) was founded 175 years ago. Now it plans to enter the world record in the Guinness Book of Records as “the world’s longest passenger train on narrow gauge”. All the conditions have been fulfilled for this.
The previous world record was set in 1991. At that time, 1732 coupled wagons with a length of 70 meters were rolled. After more than 30 years, this record has been shattered!
