Ottawa Canada wants to increase its military presence in the Indo-Pacific. This will be part of a comprehensive strategy for the region to be published soon, Defense Minister Anita Anand announced on Friday.

“Our strategy will position Canada as a leader in promoting peace and security in the region,” he said in Halifax. “We will increase our military presence and expand our defense and security ties with partners and allies in the region.”

Its background is the efforts of Western countries to counter the growing influence of China in the region. The US launched an informal federation of states last summer to strengthen ties with the Pacific island nations.

The so-called Partners in the Blue Pacific (PBP) also included Australia, Japan, New Zealand and Great Britain. They wanted to promote economic relations between the rest of the world and the Pacific states.
