+++ December 2, 2022: Kira Weidle seventh in first World Cup – Gogia wins +++
Kira Weedle’s First Downhillworld Cup missed out on a podium finish this season. At the race in Canada’s Lake Louise, the 26-year-old from Starnberg finished seventh on Friday. In icy temperatures of minus 15 degrees Celsius, the fourth of the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing was 0.97 seconds slower than Italy’s winner Sofia Gogia in the longest women’s downhill race over 3000 metres. Second was Olympic champion Corinne Sutter from Switzerland, who was 0.04 seconds behind Austrian Cornelia Hutter (+0.06).
Weidle started the race in tenth position and initially ran third, but then had to be passed by four other competitors. The speed specialist has finished on the podium four times in his career so far. The second place was the best result last winter in Zauchensee.
Born in Stuttgart, she is the only hope in the German speed team. Ronnie Remme, who started for DSV this year, will be out for the rest of the season following a cruciate and inner ligament tear. Emma Eicher (Mahlstetten) finished 31st, 3.03 seconds back.
There’s another downhill run on the 1988 Olympic course this Saturday (8.30pm), followed by a super-G on Sunday (7pm).
+++ December 2, 2022: Skier Wedel with big goals: “The first victory is yet to come” +++
Germany’s best downhill skier Kira Weidel begins her new World Cup season with high expectations. “The first win is still to come. It’s still the big goal,” said the 26-year-old from Sternberg before the first descent of the winter at Lake Louise on Friday (8pm / Sportschau.de and Eurosport). Career so far in podium places. Second place was the best result last winter in Zouchensee. The big coup this winter should finally be successful. The Olympic fourth-place finisher got the necessary fine-tuning at the summer training camp in Chile. “What we’ve done this year is even more giant slalom training. It brings a lot to super-G,” Weidle said. In her weak pace discipline, the German still missed out on a run in the top five.
In South America, Weidel also trained with the German men’s team. Weddle said, “That taught me a lot. How they approach transitions, how they make jumps – there are so many elements I can learn from.” The Stuttgart native is once again a beacon of hope for the German speed team. Ronnie Remme, who started for DSV this year, will be out for the rest of the season following a cruciate and inner ligament tear.
+++ November 30, 2022: Knee injury after training fall: season closed for skier Remé +++
Ski racer Ronnie Remme is out for the remainder of the Alpine World Cup season. The 26-year-old suffered a cruciate and internal ligament tear in his right knee in a fall during the first downhill training session in Canada’s Lake Louise, the German Ski Association (DSV) announced on Wednesday. It added that a further course of action should be decided after further tests at a Calgary hospital.
The native Canadian with German ancestry only moved to DSV in October. The all-rounder was planned for this winter in the German speed team. Alpine national coach Andreas Puellakar called the failure “bitter”. “Ronnie has been in good form in training over the last few weeks. We all wish him a speedy recovery and we are sure he will strengthen our team again next winter.”
At Lake Louise, two downhills and a women’s super-G are on the schedule from Friday through Sunday. Kira Weidle is on the start for DSV. Whether Emma Eicher will take part in the race or not will be decided after the training session.
