Sometimes harsh words help.
It’s no secret that Tom Cruise (60) is tough. That one stunt doesn’t jump out of a plane twice, instead the “Mission Impossible” star prefers to open his own parachute or climb the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest tower in Dubai.
But not all acting aides are as tough as the 60-year-old’s. For example Emily Blunt (39). Tears fell on the set of the blockbuster “Edge of Tomorrow.” And that, colleague Tom apparently couldn’t handle at all. The 39-year-old revealed this on the “Smartless” podcast.
Reason for the sentimentality on set: The heavy costume. “We had to wear these huge suits, which I think would have been great if it was CGI. But we actually had to put them on,” Emily revealed.
Fun Fact: CGI clothing is worn by actors in movies that require visual effects. They are skintight suits with many small reference points. These points reflect infrared light, which is emitted and received by a special camera system. Thus, even the tiniest of Hollywood stars become giant fictional characters on screen.
Unfortunately, Emily got dressed up in a “real costume” on set: “There was nothing comfortable about those suits. It must have been 85 pounds, it was so heavy. I cried the first time I wore it.” And for good reason: The dress caused injuries to her collarbone and ribs.
A male stunt double had to take over because the suit was too heavy for a woman. oops
And colleague Tom Cruise? He didn’t know how to deal with the situation and the tears.’ He just looked at me and then said: ‘I know, I know.’ I said, ‘Tom, I’m not sure how I’m going to shoot.’
The 60-year-old then chose to take the hard route and summed up: “Come on, stop being such a coward, okay?” Emily then bravely laughs off the situation and makes it through to the scene.
And the tears were worth it. The film grossed US$370 million (€350 million), more than double its production cost.
Incidentally, despite wild speculation, there won’t be a second part of “Edge of Tomorrow”. The reason: A legal dispute between production companies Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow.
